A man was on Wednesday arrested for being in illegal possession of six elephant tusks. Atanas Nzioka was arrested at a petrol station in Donholm, Nairobi and detained at the Lang'ata police station. The police officers at Lang’ata acted on intelligence reports that there was a man at Dohnholm petrol station with elephant tusks. According to an IUCN’s African Elephant Status Report, Africa’s elephant population has crashed by an estimated 111,000 in the past decade primarily due to poaching. Eastern Africa - the region most affected by poaching - has experienced an almost 50 per cent elephant population reduction.
