The opening goal was entirely of Arsenal’s doing, Iwobi’s gaffe in losing the ball on the edge of his own area compounded by his defence’s collective failure to clear the ensuing danger. For City’s second goal, just before the break, Arsenal’s defence went AWOL once again, Stephan Lichsteiner failing to spot the run of Raheem Sterling in behind him. Sterling was allowed to steer the ball across the face of the Arsenal goal, where it was met by Aguero, who applied the simplest of finishes from close-range. The goal owed much to City’s sublime creativity and devastating ability to open up defences, but their task was made easier by an obliging Arsenal rearguard.
