BALTIMORE—Since 1988, Lawrence Jones has been the keeper of a Preakness Stakes tradition. Every year, moments after the race ends, he paints the winning jockey’s colors on a horse-and-rider weather vane at the Pimlico Race Course winner’s circle. He has painted in drizzle and in sunshine, atop a rickety ladder and from a hydraulic lift known as a cherry picker. He has memorialized wins by two eventual Triple Crown champs, including Justify last year, and the first filly to win in 85 years, Rachel Alexandra, in 2009.
