The trooper traced the license plate to Mr. Colon-Ortiz and met him at his apartment, and he voluntarily provided a DNA sample, the authorities said. Ms. Marcotte was visiting her hometown, Princeton, Mass., when she left her mother’s house for a run on a country road in the afternoon of Aug. 7. Ms. Marcotte, who often visited her mother on the weekends, was expected to return to New York that day. Early credited Ms. Marcotte for helping to lead the police to the arrest. Mr. Colon-Ortiz was charged with aggravated assault and battery, and assault with attempt to rape.
