A 49-year-old man died Sunday after he and two other swimmers were rescued from the water near the Venice Beach pier. He was in grave condition when paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, said Margaret Stewart, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Lifeguards made several rescues over the weekend as swimmers got caught in strong rip currents, Barillas said. Lifeguards made contact with each of the swimmers and were bringing them to the shore when one of the swimmers lost consciousness, Barillas said. Once onshore, lifeguards began giving the man CPR.
