PUFFERFISH: A POISONOUS DISH Pufferfish is a delicacy called fugu which is popular in Japan, but can be deadly if it is not prepared properly. The fish has a poison called tetrodotoxin (TTX) throughout its body, in particularly high concentrations in the liver and reproductive organs. There is no known antidote for TTX poisoning which, as well as pufferfish, is also found in some species of newts, frogs, flatworms and crabs. Most pufferfish poisoning happens in Asia, where the fish is native, but it can also occur in regions with warm seawater. He already had high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease, and the pufferfish poisoning pushed it over the edge and finished off the organs.
