Cells from a woolly mammoth that died 28,000 years ago have shown signs of activity after being implanted in mice. These showed evidence of essential biological processes needed for cell division to take place. None, however, produced the actual cell division needed for a mammoth rebirth. The nuclei were able to create cellular structures that are often a precursor to cell division. Because some permafrost regions have stayed frozen for thousands of years, it is of particular interest for scientists.
