India’s lower house passed legislation on January 8 that would grant citizenship to members of certain religious minorities but not Muslims, sparking protests in the country’s northeast. Muslims are excluded, in what critics say is a transparent pitch by a Hindu nationalist prime minister to voters. Taking a jibe at Modi, the seasoned politician wondered how a person who didn’t look after his wife would look after the citizens of the country. “Prime Minister Modi is a liar. He has not fulfilled a single promises he made in 2014,” she said.
