Malaysia's January industrial output up 3.5% on year

KUALA LUMPUR (March 13): Malaysia's industrial production index (IPI) rose 3.5% in January 2017 from a year earlier, on growth in all three components of the gauge. In a statement today, the Statistics Department said manufacturing output climbed 4.6%, while mining and electricity production were 1.1% higher each. "The mining sector output grew at a slower pace of 1.1% in January 2017, after registering a higher growth of 5.8% in December 2016, supported by the increase in natural gas index by 5.3%. "The electricity sector output increased slightly by 1.1% in January 2017, after a significant growth of 6.1% in December 2016," the department said. January 2017's IPI's 3.5% on-year rise slowed from December 2016's 4.7% expansion, the department said.
