Malaysia to acquire high-tech scanning machines capable of detecting hidden drugs, weapons


BEIJING: Malaysia has agreed in principle to acquire from China scanning machines capable of detecting drugs and weapons hidden in containers and vehicles, the deputy prime minister said today. Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi the acquisition of the state-of-the-art equipment will boost Malaysia’s capabilities in combating transnational crime and countering terrorism. “The Chinese have developed a sophisticated scanner capable of detecting drugs, weapons and any kind of items being smuggled in and out of the country. “We have agreed in principle to acquire these scanners to be used by the police’s Criminal Investigation Department and Narcotics Department,” he told reporters at China World Hotel here, today. He added that the scanners have been used by the Chinese government for the past three years and have been proven to be effective.
