Malaysia 'thoroughly prepared' to decide on nuclear power, says minister

KUALA LUMPUR (March 7): Minister in the prime minister's department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said Malaysia has received the final report of the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) for Phase 1 of a three-phase nuclear power infrastructure development. At a press conference today, she said the report indicated Malaysia is thoroughly prepared and has a considerable base of knowledge to make an informed decision on the introduction of nuclear power into its power generation mix. "We will be tabling a paper to the cabinet sometime next week on this, and any further action will depend on the approval of the government," said Nancy. While Malaysia had passed the first phase of the review, the report also outlined several recommendations for Malaysia's pursuit of nuclear energy, including strengthening government commitment, enhancing public awareness, further development of the country's legal and regulatory infrastructure, and plans to finance a nuclear plant. Nancy said the recommendations will be taken into account to assist in meeting Malaysia's tentative target to commission its first nuclear power plant beyond 2030.
