KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Vietnam are seen by their own citizens as having the most severe corruption problems among the Asia-Pacific countries, according to a survey by Transparency International. The two countries ranked lowest among 16 nations in the “People and Corruption” survey, conducted between July 2015 and January 2017 and involving 20,000 citizens. Both countries fared badly across the key corruption issues — the level of corruption in the country, government’s effort to curb corruption, corruption among the police, public participation in bribes and the ability for the public to curb the practice. In comparison, Australia, Sri Lanka and Taiwan had the most positive ratings by their citizens among the 16 Asia-Pacific countries. Transparency International suggests an urgent need to stop corruption within the public sector and to better support whistle-blowers.
