Malaysia’s reformist icon Anwar freed, given royal pardon

Malaysia’s jailed opposition icon Anwar Ibrahim reacts to supporters as he leaves a hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia’s king had agreed to pardon Anwar, who was jailed in 2015 for sodomy in a conviction that he said was politically motivated. The royal palace said in a statement that the monarch had given Anwar a full pardon following advice from the Pardons Board. Anwar’s wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, is currently the deputy prime minister. Mahathir, prime minister for 22 years until 2003, has said he will run the country for “one to two years” to fix Malaysia’s financial problems.
