The low representation of science research as a career choice applies also to the United States. Our chemistry teacher, a youth corps member of the University of Ibadan, would conduct some rudimentary experiments with what we had. In any case, the teacher left at the end of his youth service, and with him went any flickering thought of a science research career. Surveys of what inspired research scientists to pursue that career show that such early exposure to the miracles of science is what turned them on to it. Most research scientists chose the career because they passionately want to know why things are and they savour the intellectual challenge of uncovering them.
