Where, when, why: In early August, we visited Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia. After many trips farther afield, we decided it was time to reacquaint ourselves with our neighbor to the north. I had visited Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island more than 40 years ago, but that’s a long time between visits, and my wife had never seen the Canadian Maritimes. We began our journey in New Brunswick, near the border with Maine, ferried across the Bay of Fundy to explore the south coast of Nova Scotia, then set our sights on Cape Breton. The park is not large by U.S. or Canadian standards — at 366 square miles, it is less than half the size of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and one-seventh the size of Canada’s Banff National Park.
