Almost 40pc of the Republic’s electricity needs are met from renewables, mainly from more than 200 wind farms. It also signals difficulties ahead for the North-South interconnector project which would see a string of high-voltage pylons erected through Meath, Cavan and Monaghan. While long-term the plan is to build off-shore turbines, there are many more on-shore wind farms in the pipeline.
