The poll uncovered more stark evidence of a bitter North-South divide as the country grapples with the disease. Northern leaders have been increasingly critical of ministers’ handling of the crisis – and voters in the region fear Whitehall does not know what to do next. The figure rose to 62% of northerners who thought lockdown was eased too early in their region, compared with 53% of southerners. The poll also showed that 57% of northerners thought lockdown rules were unclear, compared with 41% who said they were clear. In the capital, 62% wanted the UK Government to have the most power, compared with just 42% in the North.
