In the month of April, the major Indian ports put together witnessed 1.78% growth. The dozen ports handed 56.81 million tonnes of cargo as against 55.82 million tonnes during the corresponding month the previous year. The nine ports of Kolkata (including Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal (formerly Kandla) have registered positive growth in traffic. The highest growth was registered by Kolkata at 12.56%, followed by Kamarajar (12.08%), New Mangalore (11.41%), Paradip (11.12%) and Chennai (7.55%). Commodity-wise, the highest share of cargo was of Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants at 28.30%, followed by container cargo (20.88%), thermal and steam coal (17.06%), etc.
