There was “a low likelihood of casualties and damage” from the quake itself, the United States Geological Survey said. The major quake was followed by at least five aftershocks of 5.0-magnitude or higher. It devastated Anchorage and unleashed a tsunami that slammed the Gulf of Alaska, the US west coast, and Hawaii. More than 250 people were killed by the quake and the tsunami.
