An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 has struck Macedonia, sending people out onto the streets for safety in the capital, Skopje. The Potsdam-based German Research Centre for Geosciences, or GFZ, says the quake struck just after 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) Sunday at a depth of 26 kilometers (16.16 miles). The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.3, with its epicenter about four kilometers east-northeast of Skopje. A smaller quake was recorded earlier in the day. A large earthquake in 1963 leveled much of Skopje, killing more than 1,000 people.
