Mackenzie District considers imposing visitor toll

Mackenzie District considers imposing visitor tollALDEN WILLIAMS/FAIRFAX NZ Mackenzie deputy mayor Graham Smith says infrastructure in the Mackenzie District is lagging. An international visitor toll could be used to help pay for Mackenzie's "lagging" infrastructure, deputy mayor Graham Smith says. The Mackenzie District had the highest number of international visitors per population in New Zealand last year - 54 visitors for every resident according to Statistics New Zealand figures. Smith supported the taxing international visitors to raise tourism-related revenue, which could benefit the Mackenzie district. Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) chief executive Chris Roberts said a Taonga Levy or a district toll was "too simplistic" and international visitors were "over-taxed already".
