MSC Megaship Loses 270 Containers in Rough North Sea Waters

As the container shipping industry continues to boom, companies are adopting new technologies to move cargo faster and shifting to crewless ships. But it’s not all been smooth sailing and the future will see fewer players stay above water. Santa Claus made a second call on Dutch islanders in the North Sea after a giant Mediterranean Shipping Co. container ship lost 270 boxes in rough seas, sparking a beach treasure hunt for everything from flat-screen televisions and car parts to furniture, shoes and toys after the goods washed ashore. The MSC Zoe, one of the world’s biggest boxships, spilled the containers Wednesday off the German island of Borkum. They then washed up on the shores of the Dutch islands of Vlieland and Terschelling.
