MPs to debate 14 names in IEBC impasse

Parliament today will debate 14 names of MPs nominated by Jubilee and Cord to sit on a joint House committee on IEBC reforms. The two Houses will debate the proposed names concurrently and approve them separately, before the committee embarks on its mandate. The motion says the first mandate of the Joint Select Committee is inquiring into allegations against the IEBC commissioners and the secretariat. After the lists were separately endorsed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Cord leader Raila Odinga, the names will likely be approved without any opposition. This is to “ensure the August 2017 elections are free and fair and are administered in an impartial, efficient, simple, accurate, verifiable, secure, accountable and transparent manner”.
