An MP must resign from Parliament if convicted of a crime with a maximum penalty of two or more years' jail time. A charge sheet at the Whanganui District Court showed a 59-year-old man, Kerry James Borrows, had been charged with careless use of a motor vehicle causing injury to two people. Under section 38 of the Land Transport Act, the maximum penalty for careless driving causing injury is three months' jail, or a fine of up to $4500.
