MMEA intercepts boat smuggling contraband cigarettes near Semporna

SEMPORNA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) intercepted a boat laden with contraband cigarettes worth RM37,800 near Pulau Boheydulang, off here, during curfew hours. In the 4.35am incident, two people on board the boat, jumped into the sea and swam towards shallow waters in a bid to escape the enforcement patrol personnel who approached them. “However, two men from the boat had jumped into the waters and escaped to a beach near Kampung Batu Semporna," he said in a statement. On inspection, MMEA personnel found 750 cartons of 'Astro' brand cigarettes. Amiludin said the boat was towed to the MMEA jetty for investigation under the Customs Act 1967.
