MMDA arrests 4,316 litterbugs in 3 months


MANILA, Philippines — More than 4,000 litterbugs were apprehended in the intensified anti-littering campaign of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) over the first quarter of this year, an official said yesterday. The agency’s Health, Public Safety and Environment Police Office apprehended a total of 4,316 litterbugs: 965 in January, 1,053 in February and 2,298 in March, MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said. Most of the litterbugs were apprehended in Monumento, Caloocan City; Cubao and North EDSA in Quezon City; Guadalupe and Buendia in Makati City; Ortigas District and EDSA-Taft, Pasay City. Lim said only 1,487 of the violators paid fines while 32 offenders rendered eight hours of community service. A violator faces a fine of P500 or eight hours of community service.
