Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League both suspended their operations on Thursday because of the coronavirus epidemic sweeping across the U.S., joining the National Basketball Association in what has become a massive shutdown of the American sports scene. The NHL announced in the early afternoon that it would “pause” its season, calling it “no longer appropriate to try to continue to play games at this time,” particularly in light of two players from the NBA’s Utah Jazz testing positive for the disease.
