THE uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK), founded by former president Jacob Zuma, has lodged an urgent application with the Constitutional Court to interdict the first sitting of Parliament scheduled for Friday, 14 June in Cape Town. The MK is contesting the fairness of the 29 May elections in the Electoral Court, arguing that the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) should redo the election within 90 days. Having secured 58 seats in its first general election participation, MK is challenging the IEC’s premature declaration of the 2024 elections as free and fair. In a related legal move, MK founder and expelled member Jabulani Khumalo has filed a notice of motion in the Western Cape High Court, seeking to interdict Parliament and the MK party from removing his name as a member of Parliament. Following their announcement to boycott the sitting, Parliament has cancelled all travel and accommodation arrangements for MK members.
