MIC requests PM to consider previous Cabinet decision on unilateral conversion - Nation

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC has asked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to consider a 2009 Cabinet decision on unilateral conversion that states the religion of a child will remain as it was at the time of birth until age 18. Its president Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam said unilateral conversion was still a major issue and had a big impact on the Indian community. "While we have made some progress in the area of marriages, it has yet to resolve the problem of unilateral conversion of children. "MIC is committed to find a solution to the problem and we have repeatedly raised the issues in all forums. However, Clause 88A of the Bill, which stated that the religion of the child "shall remain as the religion of the parties to the marriage prior to the conversion", was dropped.
