MHA uses photo of Spain-Morocco border in report on floodlighting at India-Pakistan border

NEW DELHI: In an embarrassing goof-up, the MHA has used in its annual report a picture of the Spain-Morocco border, mentioning it as the floodlighting on the International Border between India and Pakistan. The annual report 2016-17 of MHA, which showcases the achievements of the centre in the internal security and work done in north east, Jammu and Kashmir, Maoist areas and the borders, has used the picture of Ceuta border fence, which is available on the internet. The image of the Ceuta border between Spain and Morocco is available on the internet.Ceuta is an Spanish autonomous city located on the north coast of Africa, bordered by the Strait of Gibraltar and sharing a 6.4 km land border with Morocco. The 342 page annual report captions the picture as "Floodlighting along the border" and provides details of completion of floodlighting work along 1943 kms of border with Pakistan in Jammu, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab. India shares 2043 km of International Border with Pakistan. The border floodlight is of great help to the BSF for night patrols and in intercepting infiltrators.Snapshot from the MHA reportOfficials admitted that using a wrong image for Indo-Pak border is embarrassing but there was no official comment from the MHA.Whether a BSF personnel or a junior official in MHA used the wrong picture in the annual report is not clear yet. Sources said that the matter will be probed. The annual report is released every year and the home minister holds a press conference to explain the work done by the centre. The report has been out in the public domain for almost three months now. It will be difficult to correct the gaffe and new copies of report will need to be published, which is a huge task, said sources.MHA did not comment on whether an enquiry will be ordered.
