And aviation expert Clive Irving claims the plane hit the Indian Ocean in a remote area after an uncontrollable fire on board. He said the blaze was caused by the 221kg of lithium-ion batteries it was carrying, positioned alongside five tonnes of mangosteens - a sweet tropical fruit about as big as a tangerine. Mr Irving has pointed out how the Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing had highlighted an "immediate and urgent risk" tied to transporting lithium-ion batteries a year after the MH370 disaster. Lithium-ion batteries are typically used in mobile phones and laptops. Irving believes the batteries could have caused a fire in the hold of the Boeing 777 that then overwhelmed the plane's fire-suppression system.
