PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Standing on the 14th fairway at Pebble Beach on Sunday with a one-shot lead over Brooks Koepka, Gary Woodland had options. Like Koepka — the man trying to chase him down at the 119th U.S. Open — Woodland considered himself an athlete first and a golfer second. On Sunday at the par-5 14th hole, Woodland would make what might have been the second most important decision of his athletic career. Heading into the U.S. Open, Woodland was 0 for 7 on Sundays with the 54-hole lead. Considering his late start to an exclusive sports relationship with golf, Woodland thinks he’s just getting started.
