Super Rugby began in 1996, the year after the sport turned professional, and there had quite literally never been anything like it. At the time when England, and much of the northern hemisphere, were still sticking it up the jumper, Super Rugby moved so fast that it drew comparisons with basketball. Yet Australia and South Africa were losing players to the northern hemisphere and couldn't sustain the quality of the Super Rugby brand.
