PETALING JAYA: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has donated RM30,000 to 25 eligible former Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd staff. "Based on the data and interviews conducted by MAIWP treasury officers with several Utusan employees, we immediately termed those who were 'asnaf'," he said at a press conference on Friday (Oct 11). He added that MAIWP offered 28 zakat schemes to the eligible group, such as basic necessities, medical support, entrepreneurial support, welfare, and religious schemes. "Today, we give this contribution to 25 eligible former Utusan employees, and we will continue this process to identify more Utusan employees who are worthy to receive the contribution through zakat." On Wednesday (Oct 9), Utusan Group employees were told to pack up their belongings and leave the office by 1pm as the cash-strapped company officially ceases operations.
