Thousands of motorists have been stranded on the M3 for several hours after police closed a section of the motorway in both directions and called in a bomb disposal team. Hampshire police said the road was closed because of a potential hazardous material incident, and the bomb disposal team was trying to establish exactly what the material was. Officers were working alongside the Hampshire fire and rescue service and the explosive ordnance disposal team, the police said in a statement. “The road is still closed at this time, and we will endeavour to get the material cleared as soon as possible. Highways England said the motorway would remain closed for several hours, with traffic also building up on diversionary roads.
