Māori surfing competition returns to Taranaki for third year running DEENA COSTERSIMON O'CONNOR/STUFF Waitara surfer Zhana Hutchieson took two titles at the 2017 Aotearoa Māori Surf champs. New Zealand's indigenous surfing talent will take to the Taranaki waves to vie for titles in October. For the third year in a row, the Aotearoa Māori Surfing champs will be held in the region, with the waves at Waitara the primary battle ground. A pōwhiri will take place on October 19 at Owae Marae in Waitara, before the entrants hit the surf on October 20-21. In 2017, Te Ātiawa's Zhana Hutchieson took out the open women's division along with the under 18 girls title.
