Lydia Ko expected to announce Auckland's LPGA golf tournament

Lydia Ko expected to announce Auckland's LPGA golf tournamentMartin Hunter/Getty Images Lydia Ko on the last hole of the New Zealand Women's Open at Clearwater, which she won in January. New Zealand Golf looks like it has got its ambitious plan to stage a $6 million Lydia Ko-headlined, LPGA-sanctioned tournament in Auckland over the line. As reported previously by stuff.co.nz, NZG has been working feverishly behind the scenes to put together the funding and sponsorship support needed to stage a tournament of this status in Auckland. But the LPGA-level upgrade comes at a cost, with a price tag thought to be in the $6m region. Thursday's announcement indicates that NZG boss Dean Murphy, who has been driving the quest to provide Ko a prestigious home tournament, may well have been successful.
