French police are investigating the film director Luc Besson after a 27-year-old woman filed a complaint against him for rape. Judicial sources confirmed to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that a “complaint has been made for acts qualifying as rape”. A lawyer for Besson, who is one of the most influential and highest paid film directors in France, told AFP: “Luc Besson categorically denies these fantasist accusations. Besson has been married four times, including to the film-maker and actor Maïwenn, who he married when she was 16. The allegation against Besson is the latest sexual assault complaint to emerge following the scandal of the disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who has been accused of rape and assault.
