This week marks the 50th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, the landmark Supreme Court decision that invalidated state laws restricting interracial marriage. For two seemingly different individuals, we share a love for food, family and passion for social and environmental causes. In North Carolina, it was against the law for my husband (white) and me (Lumbee Indian) to marry. I dyed my hair red to try to fit in with my white friends. When Basab died 50 years after we met, his memorial service was filled with our family and friends from all sides of the globe.
