Loose final quarter gives Dancer some food for thought

Ireland conceded six times in the final quarter of their fourth uncapped match of the week against Great Britain to up-end what had been an impressive performance to that point. But a loose final-quarter showing meant they ultimately lost out 7-2, ending their week’s challenge matches with a 0-0 draw – achieved on Friday – to go with losses last Tuesday (3-1) and Wednesday (4-1). As such, it gives coach Sean Dancer plenty of food for thought with the European Championships – which acts as a 2022 World Cup qualifier – coming up in six weeks’ time. He will have Ayeisha McFerran back available for that competition following the conclusion of her Dutch Hoofdklasse commitments yesterday, signing off on the season with SV Kampong with a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Hurley. It was a second successive clean sheet for McFerran in a roller-coaster season in which Kampong occupied bottom position at one stage but a late-season run saw them climb up to eighth in the table.
