Galella soon became one of the most famous paparazzi of his day, with his images appearing in the pages of Time, American Vogue, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker and Life, among other publications. He also became a mainstay in major galleries and museums, like MoMA in New York City and the Tate Modern in London, with Andy Warhol – a man who shared Galella’s fascination with celebrity culture – dubbing him his ‘favourite photographer’. The New York Post once dubbed his treatment of the former first lady ‘the most co-dependent celeb-pap relationship ever’ and the two became embroiled in a legal tussle, resulting in a 1972 restraining order against Galella. He was then found to have broken the terms of the order four times, which he ultimately settled with a $10,000 fine and by rescinding his rights to photograph Jackie and her children. It was an intense fixation that even Galella acknowledged, titling one of his books, Jackie: My Obsession.
