Look for fatbergs, not for the nessie

In normal cases, sewage should have no place above ground; but once it morphs into that modern monster of ossified waste material called a 'fatberg', a museum is precisely where it should be. As monsters go, fatbergs are more real than Nessie and certainly more relevant to our times than dinosaurs , particularly since we all have had a hand in their creation and proliferation. While the 250m-long, 150-tonne behemoth found in the sewers of London's Whitechapel last year may have captured the headlines, most cities with large underground drains play host to them. Indian fatbergs have not yet made news but they may well be growing apace in some sewer beneath you. Beware, what dump down the drain today may come back as a fatberg to torment everyone some day.
