Lok Sabha passes citizenship bill amid opposition protest

Outfits protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill set tyres on fire in Dibrugarh, Assam, on Tuesday. PTINew Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, despite a backlash from opposition parties and unrest in Assam, just a day after the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) pulled out of its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam. The bill will now be tabled in the Rajya Sabha for discussion, with the upper chamber extending its winter session till Wednesday. The opposition in the Rajya Sabha has raised objections to the proposed amendment in the bill, which excludes Muslims and minorities from Nepal and Sri Lanka. Opposition parties are thus likely to push for the bill to be referred to a select committee before it is discussed in the Rajya Sabha.
