Loggers stealing century-old rosewood trees in Buri Ram

The people of Ban Nong Wua Khwai rallied in the 330-rai Nong Wua Khwai reserve, the sole remaining forest in Satuk district, in the north of the province. Residents of Ban Nong Wua Khwai in Buri Ram's Satuk district show the stump of a poached Siamese rosewood tree on Tuesday, demanding more serious forest protection from authorities. The disheartened villagers have informed local police of the loss of about 20 big rosewood trees lately, but to no avail, said Umthong Sakaeo, the 56-year-old head of the village. People there have banded together to protect the forest for generations, but lately illegal loggers have been active with chainsaws, felling rosewood trees aged 50-100 years for their coveted timber.
