’Tosin OluwalowoNigerian sprinters have expressed their desire of breaking the 100m African record set by Olusoji Fasuba over 14 years ago. Fasuba ran a time of 9.85s at the Doha Grand Prix May 12, 2006, breaking the earlier record of 9.86s set by Namibian, Frankie Fredericks, 10 years earlier. Nigerian sprinters Seun Ogunkoya, Deji Aliu and Uchenna Emedolu, running sub 10.00s time, all tried in vain to break Fredericks record, before Fasuba erased it in Doha. Of the active Nigerian athletes who specialise in the 100m, only Oduduru and Raymond Ekevwo have ran sub 10.0s timesin recent times. According to Enoch Adegoke, the advancement in technology will make it easier for Nigerian athletes to break the 14-year record.
