It’s a player-first club, Smyrniotis says, something he realized was lacking in the Canadian soccer system after returning to North America from a stint coaching and earning his master’s degree in Europe. The academy, which operates out of the Hershey Centre and draws players from across the GTA, should see more of its graduates drafted next January. Smyrniotis attributes Sigma’s success to its culture, formal training structure and pronounced pathway for players hoping to play professionally. “We’ve been blessed with a lot of these guys doing well,” Sigma technical director Bobby Smyrniotis says. “It’s opening more and more doors for our next group of players.”And his success has brought attention to Sigma FC, the Mississauga-based soccer organization Larin joined when he was 12 years old.
