SAN ANTONIO — After a year of working at an inpatient residential treatment center outside San Antonio, Christine Varela Mayer and her colleagues found that former patients called back with stories of frustration. It put her on a mission to normalize sober living and sober activities in San Antonio. Willis Hall, the main outpatient center, overlooks the creek and features a San Antonio mission-styled window from the Katy Depot that was razed in 1968. Observing and listening across San Antonio, he finds intriguing tales to tell about everyday people. To counter that, they’ve hosted a sober Octoberfest, sober Fiesta and free sober movie nights.
