Live updates: U.S. blows past coronavirus record with more than 70,000 new cases in one day

Days after Michigan allowed bars and restaurants to reopen, large crowds of people without masks gathered shoulder-to-shoulder inside Harper’s Restaurant & Brewpub in East Lansing. Michigan liquor regulators said Thursday they are investigating how so many people managed to become infected at the pub. Of related cases, nearly 150 people newly confirmed to have the virus had gone to the bar themselves the week of June 12, the Associated Press reported. Although state liquor regulators have said they are primarily focused on fact-finding, the results of their probe could result in the suspension or revocation of the bar’s liquor license. Gretchen Whitmer (D) ordered bars and restaurants in most parts of Michigan to close for indoor service if they made more than 70 percent of their profit from alcohol sales.
