By GODWIN SIUNDUMore by this AuthorThere are two bittersweet moments I recall that ringed off a space in my heart for literature. “Who wrote the novel, God’s Bits of Wood?” The host, who I later learnt was Billy Omala, posed. For Kiswahili literature, we studied Ebrahim Hussein’s Mashetani and Shaban Robert’s Kusadikika among others. The blind spot in this debate is on how pre-university students are inducted into the critical study of literature. Our task, as readers and teachers of literature, therefore, is to go beyond facilitating our students to pass examinations.
