Six cases of the infection identified in hospitals in Liverpool and ManchesterThree hospital patients have died after eating chicken sandwiches contaminated with listeria bacteria, health officials have announced. Six inpatients in total, all with underlying health conditions, fell ill from eating chicken sandwiches supplied by the Good Food Chain. The Good Food Chain ceased production voluntarily this week, as did North Country Cooked Meats, which sold it the chicken, after tests found traces of listeria at its premises. The Good Food Chain supplies about 40 hospitals across England but is currently not producing the sandwiches and salads under investigation as possible sources of the listeria. Public Health England sources said it was their working assumption that the chicken in the sandwiches was to blame.
